The faces behind the fonts - Bo Berndal

I can spend every minute doing the thing I like most of all; my hobby is creating typefaces. I’m a little jealous of those designers that seem to go on and on into their old age creating excellent typefaces. ;-)
In other words, I hope I’ll be doing the same, but I have already had a very good life …so far!

5 Great New Free Fonts

Tondu
A versatile display font that combines classic proportions with modern styling. The precise letter fit makes it perfect for use across signage, book jackets, packaging, posters and t-shirts. Details include an extended European character set, manually edited kerning and Euro symbol.
You can find it here: myfonts.com

Fanwood
Based on work of a famous Czech-American type designer of yesteryear. The package includes roman and italic. The current version is 1.1, which includes a few improvements. It also introduces Fanwood Text roman and italic, which are the same as Fanwood but slightly darker and reduces in contrast; I tailored it to increase readability on my Amazon Kindle 3 e-book reader.

Fabrica
Fabrica is a deceptively simple sans serif typeface optimized for screen display on handheld devices. With its optimal quality and legibility, Fabrica proves to be highly efficient for small screens. Its details are drawn from the more systematic constructed Neo-Grotesques, giving it a neutral tone of voice. Above all, Fabrica's beauty is found in its functionality.

Weston
The main purpose is to provide designers with font, suitable for modification in logos and headlines. Combined wisely, Weston will spice up your design adding the “not-your-usual-font-choice” effect. Inspired by the evergreen Grover & Rockwell, this font would love to find his place in your library.

Matilde
Matilde is friendly thin typeface with extra tall capitals, elegant look combined with decorative elements. This typeface will work well for headings, short paragraphs, magazines, children’s books, posters, logos and any type of graphic design.

Nice and clean NBC Sports Logo refreshing

Changes include:
- The Peacock is slightly larger.
- The letters “NBC” are still bold but have a new font which puts them in balance with the Peacock.
- “Sports” maintains its scripted feel, but features a new hand-lettered font exclusively created for NBC Sports.
- Previously “Sports” was on an angle, but it has been straightened to allow for “Network” to fit easily beneath it and to accommodate the on-air design of commonly used sports tickers.

“The re-brand effort afforded us the opportunity to modernize the NBC Sports logo,” said John Miller, Chief Marketing Officer, NBCUniversal Television Group and head of the NBC Sports Agency. “The changes are subtle, but signal a big change: a new beginning for the NBC Sports Group.”

Useful Photoshop Tools and Techniques For Your Workflow

Productivity is a crucial asset of professional designers. Photoshop is an extremely powerful application for photo processing and image manipulation, and we can make it even more powerful by using handy tools, actions, plugins and templates to save time for solving mundane regular tasks. The better our professional tool set is, the more time we can spend to focus on the actual design process rather than the tool we are using to implement it on screen.

The new and better Helvetica - Sonoran! ;)

Nearly thirty years in the making, the highly anticipated Sonoran is finally here.
Typeface designers Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders first began work on Sonoran in the early 1980s, drawing inspiration from the classic Swiss typeface Helvetica.
“Helvetica is a great font, people really love it. But it does have its flaws,” says Nicholas.
“With Sonoran, our main goal was to fix Helvetica’s mistakes.”

Why Pro Athletes Sleep 12 Hours A Day

If you thought your lazy, sullen teenager slept a lot, they've got nothing on your typical pro athlete, who routinely gets between 10-12 hours a night. Compare that to the average of 6.44 hours, and you've got to wonder why guys like Steve Nash or Roger Federer aren't endorsing a high-performance line of blankies instead of shoes.
